Who we are

ENVODEV is a not-for-profit, non-governmental association in Chad whose purpose is to provide economic relief through culturally and geographically relevant projects which focus on vocational training and job creation.

Our mission

OUR MISSION is to harness local community resources and develop new skills while alleviating the serious energy crisis in Chad.

How we operate

Currently all of ENVODEV’s work is represented by two Portuguese NGO's, CEAUP (Centro de Estudos Africanos da Universidade do Porto) and Engenho&Obra; and it received financial contributions from Portuguese foundation Calouste Gulbenkian, EDP Foundation and Portugal-África Foundation; as well as from Mennonite Central Committee (MCC.org). ENVODEV is registered in Chad as an Association Nationale. The association has staff active in Europe and Chad. ENVODEV understands that poverty reduction must be met within the context in which it has developed and the association is now focused on two main projects: the ecoCharcoal project and the improved cook-stoves project, directly related to each other. These projects' main objectives are to contribute to reducing deforestation levels and alleviate the current energy crisis.

Our values

  • ENVODEV understands that change will only come about within the existing cultural framework of the Chadian people.
  • ENVODEV only takes on projects relevant within their social and economic environments.
  • ENVODEV resources are spent through apprenticeship programs, training local staff and community members to integrate existing projects or develop their own.
  • ENVODEV wants local managers to feel ownership of the projects they are involved in.
  • ENVODEV training programs must always be relevant within the local economy.
