The method: pyrolysis
Kiln preparation: A modified steel drum serves as a kiln. Rice straw is inserted at the bottom as lighting fuses. The kiln is filled to the top around a tube that allows better airflow. The tube is removed and the fuses are lit. High temperatures circulate through the steel drum. Once the temperature is high enough, the kiln is hermetically sealed. With a modified steel drum, pyrolysis of rice-straw takes 25 minutes.
PRessing and drying
Eco-Charcoal Briquette Production: When the biomass is fully carbonized, it is mixed with a natural binder. The binder is either made of manioc or other kinds of plant-derived pastes. The charcoal paste is then pressed in locally made molds. The briquettes are dried and ready to be used or sold on the market. Eco-Charcoal is safe, non-toxic, odorless and thermally efficient.
