When we first tried using rice-straw to make charcoal we followed a simple video made by Amy Smith, a renowned MIT engineer, who sought to find solutions to the energy problems in Haiti. By adapting her method to the Chadian context we were able to make rice-straw charcoal briquettes. A way to an energy solution with a lot of potential was opened in a country where finding fuel for cooking has become a question of survival. David DeArmey brought back samples of rice-straw charcoal and sent them to one of our board members, Joshua Lohnes, who currently lives in the Boston area. Joshua had the opportunity to present the charcoal to the D-Lab and to the International Innovations in Health Lab at MIT. They will be testing the quality of the charcoal as well as its heating efficiency. Their input will be of utmost importance as we seek the best quality of charcoal with the least environmental impact possible.
