After successful training, Belaba prepares for dry season´s production.

In October, a group of motivated people joined and formed a group called APRO-ECO (Association for the Protection of the Ecosystem). This association was specifically created to manage the production of rice-straw based charcoal briquettes.

Now, ENVODEV is working closely with APRO-ECO to develop a sustainable plan of action. Some of the tasks at hand include finding a strategy for collecting rice-straw around the Moundou area. The amount of communication with local rice cultivators is huge, yet indispensable. Volunteers of APRO-ECO must spend time explaining to farmers the benefits of handing the rice-straw to APRO-ECO instead of burning it in the fields. ENVODEV is encouraged to see the local community pitch in time and energy to collect the huge amount of rice-straw left in the fields.

A new office for ENVODEV in Moundou

After more than 15 months of presence in Chad, ENVODEV finally opened an office in Moundou. Up until then, ENVODEV was unable to find a place for several reasons. The main one was that agencies or individuals would increase prices three to ten times when seeing an NGO. The long presence of the larger NGOs in Chad have given the impression that the financial resources of international organizations are inexhaustible. Even a Chadian working for an NGO must face his own local context. Although he perceives a regular salary, all expenses related to his personal life become unaffordable. People believe he is rich and hence surtax him. Of course, most major NGOs have the means to cushion the prices that the "Nassara," (the whites) are imposed. The problem arises for those who come with modest means. This is the case of ENVODEV, to which these high prices are inflicted.

Thanks to Aquilas Dadje, a founding member of ENVODEV Chad, we were able to acquire the long-awaited office, which was affordable by our small organization. The office is located at the southern exit of Moundou, along the Logone River, close to the only bridge that provides access to the entire southern region of Chad. We now have an established presence, a fixed place to function, where all ENVODEV meetings can be held, and where we can store all of our equipment and property. The office shares grounds with a metal center, a new partner of ENVODEV.

BELABA : After a week of training, the new group at Belaba is now able to produce rice-straw charcoal. The group of 7 women successfully learned the technique and will now be gathering all the rice-straw around the Moundou area. Kevin Bandedje and Livier Sandoval did an excellent job at training. These women are under the leadership of an association created specifically for the charcoal project. The association is called APRO-ECO, which stands for Association pour la Protection de l´Ecosystème (The Protection of the Ecosystem Association). ENVODEV and APRO-ECO are engaged at working closely together to best bring this new charcoal into the local community.

Authorizations: ENVODEV and APRO-ECO are working at receiving the necessary permits and authorizations from the Ministry of Energy and the Ministry of Environment before any sales take place. Authorities have informally approved our project and we are working on the next steps to obtain official approval.

Production: In the meantime, it is crucial to have a group such as APRO-ECO working on gathering the rice-straw before it is burned, which would leave us without the key raw material for an entire year.

Raising Awareness: Beyond the Belaba community, APRO-ECO and ENVODEV will be working at introducing the rice-straw charcoal, and raising awareness about its environmental and health benefits. Most people are content with either illegal charcoal, or raw wood for cooking. The only alternative to date is bottle natural gas, but even in a city like Moundou, second largest city in Chad, it is hardly available. Either the city is out of stock, or if it on the market, it is far beyond the majority of the population´s means. Gas has actually been out of stock on the entire Chadian territory for over a month now.

Rice-straw charcoal will be cheaper than regular illegal wood charcoal. Also, rice-straw charcoal does not smoke, making it cleaner and improving the air quality around the cooking area.
